At LNER, we're committed to becoming the most responsible train operating company in the UK. We want to ensure that we are delivering a railway network that is better for both the natural environment and for our local communities.

Background

By encouraging sustainable travel we can lessen traffic and its detrimental impacts, reduce carbon emissions and climate change, create accessible and connected communities, as well as improve people’s health, education, employability and road safety.

We’re looking for solutions that can help us lead with the most efficient and most effective approach in our industry. Specifically, we will source companies with use cases that can help us attain our goals of Environmental Sustainability, Community Investment, and Accessibility.

Key questions

Some of the key questions we're looking to solve:

  • How can we mitigate our impact on the environment at our stations, on our trains and inside our offices?

  • How can we increase recycling rates across LNER - including at our stations and on our trains?

  • How can we reduce the amount of food waste through either better stock management or retailing?

  • How can we use technology to become a 'paperless' business, whilst making our building and processes smarter?

  • How can we encourage more sustainable travel options that complement rail travel?

  • How can we look after people's health and well-being while making our customers more aware of their travel choices?
     

  • How can we continue to be a positive influence on the communities we serve and charities we partner with?​​

Potential use cases

Here are some of the areas of innovation that we're looking to explore: 

Environmental sustainability

  • Technologies that will enable LNER use less energy and become more efficient.

  • Solutions that will reduce the total amount of waste LNER generates, increase the recycling rate and work towards zero waste to landfill.

  • Innovation that can make LNER buildings 'smarter' - more efficient in terms of energy capture and storage.

  • Solutions that help improve air quality in stations and on our trains.

  • Replace internal paper-based processes with simple technology that improves efficiency and insight.

  • Tools that make travelling by train the obvious option by highlighting the environmental benefits when compared to driving or flying. 

Community investment

  • Solutions that help raise awareness of mental health among employees and customers, improving the dialogue and helping people find appropriate support.

  • Provide tools and/or devices that remove the barriers to travel by rail.
